Stand on the Right, Look Left, Mind the Gap
Getting to the U.K.

Please note that in January, the UK government is introducing a new fee for travel to the UK, called an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which will cost £10 ($13.12).

When it goes into effect: The ETA will go into effect on January 8, 2025 for most countries, including the United States. Eligible non-European travelers can apply for the ETA starting November 27, 2024. Eligible Europeans can apply starting March 5, 2025.
What it is: The ETA is a digital permission to travel that allows for multiple journeys to the UK for stays of up to six months at a time over two years.
How to apply: You can apply for an ETA online. It can take up to 72 hours to get approved for an ETA.

There is not one, not two, but six international airports located in and around London. However, the two main airports are London Heathrow and Gatwick.

Heathrow (LHR) is one of the busiest airports in the world and the most popular choice for many international travelers. To get to central London, you can ride the Underground (cheap, about 45 minutes to 1 hour), including the new Elizabeth Line, ride the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station (15 minutes) and continue on the Underground to your hotel, or hire a taxi or private driver (expensive, 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on traffic). If it is just one or two of you, we definitely recommend that if you are flying to Heathrow, you avail yourself of the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station or the Elizabeth Line. They are convenient and affordable. Tickets for both can be purchased directly at the airport after landing.

Gatwick (LGW) is the second busiest airport. It takes roughly 35 minutes to travel to central London on the Gatwick Express train. Please consider both airports when booking flights.

To fly to London, you'll need a valid passport that's valid for the duration of your stay in the United Kingdom. If you are in the market to renew your passport in the coming weeks or months, the State Department currently estimates six to eight weeks for both new passports and renewals. American citizens will not need a visa. Please visit the State Department's website as soon as possible to either secure, renew, or check on the status of your passport.

The State Department has a great summary of some of the necessary material to travel and some tips and tricks.

Getting Around London

London has an extensive public transportation network, including the famous Underground (Tube), buses, and trains. Consider getting an Oyster card or (preferably) using a contactless payment card for convenient and cost-effective travel.

When using the London Underground, remember to stand on the right side of escalators to allow others to pass on the left. Avoid rush hour if possible, as it can get very crowded.

Plan Ahead: London is a bustling city with numerous attractions. Plan your itinerary in advance and make sure to book tickets for popular attractions like the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, or the London Eye to avoid long queues. London is a great city to explore on foot. Take advantage of free walking tours or consider using mobile apps that offer self-guided tours, allowing you to discover hidden gems and iconic landmarks at your own pace.

Some of our other favorites include the Tower of London Gun Powder Plot Experience (children may be uncomfortable), a tour of the Westminster Houses of Parliament, a tour of Westminster Abbey, and the Churchill War Rooms Museum. Don't limit yourself to central London. Venture out and explore different neighborhoods like Camden, Shoreditch, or Notting Hill for unique experiences, local markets, and vibrant street art scenes.

Many of the major museums in London offer free entry, including the British Museum, the National Gallery, and the Natural History Museum. Take advantage of these opportunities to immerse yourself in art, culture, and history. London is a melting pot of diverse culinary experiences. Explore local markets like Borough Market or Camden Market to sample delicious street food. We particularly recommend a food tour of Borough Market as it allows you to sample a variety of establishments with a knowledgeable guide. Don't forget to try traditional English breakfast and afternoon tea. Fortum and Mason is a particular favorite of ours. The city is generally safe, but it's always good to take precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and keep your belongings secure. The currency in the UK is the British Pound (GBP). Make sure to have some cash with you for smaller establishments, but credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Some establishments may also be cashless. London weather can be unpredictable, so it's advisable to carry an umbrella and dress in layers. Check the weather forecast before heading out to plan accordingly. Remember, London has a rich history and vibrant culture, so embrace the city's diversity and enjoy your travel experience!

Our Venue: Trinity House

Incorporated by Henry VIII on 20 May 1514, Trinity House  has a long and storied history in service of the mariner. Today, it is the general Lighthouse Authority for England and Wales with the Princess Royal their Master.

Since 1796 Trinity House has been based at its central London headquarters at Tower Hill, alongside the River Thames. Rebuilt after the Second World War, its beautifully appointed rooms have hosted royalty, mariners, prime ministers, scientists and visitors from all over the world and houses many fine paintings, models and treasures. Upon your visit, you will get to take in some of the collection of important artifacts, including the brass bell from the royal yacht Britannia.

It is truly a special place and the home for our ceremony and reception. In acknowledgement of the journey many of you will take over the Atlantic, we think it is the proper home for our nuptials.

The grooms would love to see everyone dressed up for our wedding! The dress code is Black Tie optional - dinner jacket or smart suit for the gentlemen, formal evening gown, cocktail dress, or dressy separates for the ladies.

You may want to bring a change of shoes if you decide to wear heels. There will be a cloak room for ladies and gentlemen to change footwear or store large bag.

The Groom's parties will be dressed to impress!

Can I bring a plus one?
If your guest's name is listed on the invite and on the RSVP, then yes. Otherwise, we are keeping the wedding an intimate event with close friends and family.

Can I bring my children?
As much as we love all our friends' and families' children, unless your children are listed on the invite and on the RSVP, this is an adult only event. Children will be limited to the nieces and nephews of the grooms.

Will food be served?
Absolutely! There will be drinks and canapes during the drinks reception, a 3 course meal with dessert, wedding cake and late night treats.

Please indicate this when you RSVP. Alternatively, please let our Wedding Planner know by email, georgina@georginaalexanderweddings.co.uk

Are accommodation available nearby?
There are room blocks available at three nearby hotels. Also, this is London! The city is amazingly well connected, and the public transport is top notch. Feel free to stay where suits you and your budget. Please see the Accommodation section for more information.

Do you have a gift registry?
Your presence at our wedding is gift enough. However, if you would like to gift us something, the grooms have created a gift registry to help you choose something special.

Can I take pictures during the ceremony?
So everyone can be fully present, our ceremony will be unplugged. We have an incredible photographer who will capture the ceremony and special moments throughout the day, and we will share the photos with you after the wedding.

However, post ceremony is fair game, take all the photos! And when you do share on your socials, please tag us in all the stories and posts from the weekend and use the hashtag #LondonEyeDo. We want to see them all!

Will Louis be making the journey across the pond for the big day?
If Joe had his way, yes! Unfortunately, the logistics (and Louis’ penchant for first class or private travel) make his attendance difficult. He will be there in spirit and he has sent over some treats for the grooms and the guests!

Who should I contact with any questions?
Please contact our Wedding Planner Georgina, with any questions or queries. Her email address is georgina@georginaalexanderweddings.co.uk

Do you love Taylor Swift as much as we do?
Taylor Swift has a deep and well-documented connection with London, a city that has significantly influenced her music and personal life. This connection is partly due to her relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn, which inspired several of her songs. Swift often references London landmarks and experiences in her lyrics, painting vivid pictures of her time in the city. Additionally, she has spoken fondly of London's culture, charm, and history, and has even spent extended periods living there. London's influence is evident in albums like "Lover" and "Evermore," where the city's ambiance and her experiences there play a central role in the storytelling. Time recently posted an article about Taylor's love of London.
